mining claim
The right to use a portion of public lands to excavate metal ore or minerals. A request for a mining claim, describing the property, must be made with the appropriate federal, state, or local agency.

n.
   a description by boundaries of real property in which metal ore and/or minerals may be located. A claim on public land must be filed with the Bureau of Land Management or other federal agency, and the claim must be "worked" by being mined or prepared for mining within a specific period of time.
