priority date

priority date
Generally the first person to apply for a patent for an invention will own the patent and this position applies in most countries. However the effect of international patent conventions is that the first application is termed the "priority date" for a patent and novelty will not be prejudiced if other national applications for the same subject matter are made by the applicant within twelve months of the UK priority date. UK applicants must apply in the UK first.

priority date
An immigration law term meaning the date on which a petition for immigration or a labor certification is first filed. The priority date is used to mark the intending immigrant's place in the green card waiting list (a list that tends to exist in every green card category that's subject to an annual numerical limit). Each month, the U.S. Department of State publishes a "Visa Bulletin" with an updated list of priority dates, meaning that anyone with a date that matches or is earlier than the dates on that list can stop waiting and continue with their application for a green card.

priority date
The date of the earliest application for a patent for a particular invention in any country of the world where the "priority" of such application can be validly claimed. Public disclosures of the invention before this date will invalidate the patent. This term is also used in relation to registered designs.
