personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE)

A programme of learning for children and young people intended to help them to deal with a number of issues including:
• Personal well-being.
• Body image and health issues.
• Managing personal finance.
• Careers education.
• The harmful effects of drugs and alcohol.
• Sex and relationships education (SRE).
PSHE is currently a non-statutory subject and schools are not required to teach it under the National Curriculum. However, the Education Act 1996 requires certain mandatory subjects falling under this heading to be taught, for example, well-being.
