street name
USA
When an investor buys securities through a brokerage firm, most firms automatically put those securities into "street name." This means the brokerage firm holds its client's securities in its name or another nominee and not in the client's name, but the firm keeps records showing the client as the real or "beneficial owner." The investor does not get a certificate, but receives an account statement from the broker on at least a quarterly and annual basis showing the investor's holdings.
