environmental law

environmental law
the body of law that governs use of the natural features, now much extended by international and national legislation. The Environment Act 1995 marked an new era in the UK. What is or is not environmental law is debatable. International Treaties, European Union policies and local legislation dealing with pollution (whether of air or water), contamination of land, protection of flora and fauna (especially in relation to the food chain), disposal of waste and general nuisance are common subjects for treatments. Much of the law is enforced by the Environment Agency in England and Wales and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency in Scotland. See environment policy; habitat.
