personal injury
personal injury n: an injury to one's body, mind, or emotions; broadly: an injury that is not to one's property

Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary of Law. . 1996.

personal injury
n.
Physical injury to a person’s body; also refers to a branch of law specializing in torts arising out of physical injuries.

personal injury
an injury to the person. Although it appears a simple phrase to interpret, in some contexts it proves difficult. In Scotland, it was held that a foetus born alive and surviving very briefly could sue for personal injury in the womb (Hamilton v . Fife Health Board 1993 SLT 624). An action against a solicitor for failing to raise an action for personal injury is not a personal injury action (MacKenzie v . Digby Brown 1992 GWD 191). In England, it has been held that an unplanned pregnancy was a personal injury (Watkin v . South Manchester Health Authority [1995] TLR 380).

Collins dictionary of law. . 2001.

personal injury
An injury not to property, but to the body, mind, or emotions. For example, if you slip and fall on a banana peel in the grocery store, personal injury covers any actual physical harm (broken leg and bruises) you suffered in the fall as well as the humiliation of falling in public, but not the harm of shattering your watch.
