Competition Commission

Competition Commission
a body charged with controlling cartels, monopolies and mergers and hearing appeals against the Director General of Fair Trading in such matters. Its decisions may be challenged in the High Court or the Court of Session in Scotland. It is modelled partly on the Commission of the European Union's function in competition matters (See competition policy).

Competition Commission
A statutory body established under the UK Competition Act 1998. It has two distinct functions: it investigates and reports on matters relating to trade competition (subject to limits prescribed by statute) and the Competition Appeals Tribunal hears appeals against decisions of the Office of Fair Trading and the regulators of utilities in respect of infringements of the provisions of the Act concerning anti-competitive agreements and the abuse of a dominant position.
