contributory
A person liable to contribute to the assets of a company on its winding up and every past and present member of the company, subject to certain exceptions to protect the principle of limited liability. Contributories tend to be shareholders who have not paid for their shares in full and members of unlimited companies.
The term is defined by statute (see section 79, Insolvency Act 1986) and judicial interpretation (see, for example, Re Chesterfield Catering Co Ltd [1977] Ch 373).
