An environmental due diligence exercise often carried out in conjunction with an acquisition of land. It may include an examination of compliance records and relevant documentation and the carrying out of site investigations and tests.

An assessment of a facility's environmental regulatory compliance that is conducted independently (not by the Environmental Protection Agency). Certain entities must arrange an audit to identify energy conservation and waste reduction possibilities. Audits are sometimes required where an entity violates environmental regulations to determine how the violation's harmful impact can be mitigated.
