gilt-edged securities
Known as gilts. UK government bonds. They are a form of long-term government borrowing. Gilts usually have a fixed term and pay a fixed level of interest. Their value varies inversely with changes in the interest rates. Gilts are always redeemed at the end of their term for their original face value.
