A principle of interpretation whereby EC legal provisions, even when not directly effective, must be taken into consideration by national courts of the member states when interpreting national legislation.

A principle of interpretation whereby the courts of the member states of the EU must interpret national legislation as far as possible in a manner that is consistent with provisions of EU law even if they do not have direct effect.
