Under sections 1 and 2 of the Patents Act 1977, an invention must be new to be patentable. It will not be considered new if the information was disclosed to the public anywhere in the world before the priority date. The few exceptions to this rule include where the disclosure was made in breach of confidence, and disclosure at certain types of exhibitions. In either case, the patent application must be made within six months of the disclosure.

Any matter relating to an invention (whether a product, a process, information about either, or anything else) which has been made available to the public (in the UK or elsewhere) before the priority date of that invention, whether by written or oral description, by use or in any other way.
