tenant for life
England, Wales
When used in the context of freehold land, a holder of a freehold legal estate (freehold estate, legal estate) but only for the duration of the holder's life. On the death of the life tenant, the freehold legal estate is vested in whoever is entitled to it according to the settlement or will.
