carriage by rail

carriage by rail
a contract to carry goods or passengers on the permanent way, or railway. Essentially the same law applies as in carriage by road. After the Transport Act 1962, British Rail ceased to be a common carrier of goods, and carriage was by contract. International carriage of goods is governed by international convention: the Berne Convention of 1980.
