Burton's Legal Thesaurus. . 2006

forestalling
the now obsolete crime of buying from merchants on the way to market to sell at a better price at the market. English statutory offences were abolished in 1772, but common law equivalents were occasionally revived. The practice was outlawed in Scotland by Acts of 1535, 1540 and 1592. Sometimes also known as engrossing, which technically refers to the buying of dead victuals for hoarding or profiteering. An ancient crime in English law. See regrating.
