Maternity leave is governed by the Employment Rights Act 1996. All female employees who become pregnant are entitled to eighteen weeks maternity leave ("basic maternity leave") and thereafter return to the same job. Those with one years' continuous service are entitled to Additional Maternity Leave of 29 weeks from the birth of the child.

(AML)
A period of 26 weeks' statutory leave which begins on the first day after the end of ordinary maternity leave. Note that an employee whose expected week of childbirth (EWC) is before 1 April 2007 will only qualify for AML if she has completed 26 weeks' continuous employment by the beginning of the 14th week before the EWC.
