Forwards are similar to futures. They involve the sale of financial instruments, currencies, commodities or indices at a fixed price at a fixed date in the future. The difference is that forwards trade OTC while futures are exchange traded. Because they are not traded on regulated exchanges they expose the parties to pre-settlement risk and settlement risk.
